Come enjoy the talent of two of the finest Brazilian musicians in the city. These two women each bring their own schools of influence together for a quality performance. Aline, singer and percussionist, combines the raw magic of her performance with the sultry voice and guitar of Rio de Janeiro native Luanda. Luanda has been singing and composing professionally for more than ten years. Born into a musical family , she has lived and breathed music from a very early age, sharing her home with a veteran rocker in father Luis Moreno, and mother Irinéa Maria, a composer of bossa nova. As a solo artist Luanda performs not only her own original compositions, but also MPB classics by the likes of Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Benjor, Caetano Veloso and Carmem Miranda interpreted with her own unique flair. A percussionist and singer, Aline is a natural talent and a powerful presence on stage. Born in BeloHorizonte, Brasil, her introduction to Afro-Brazilian rhythms began in her early teens with capoeira. She was introduced to Maracatu by percussionist Eder Rocha from the band Mestre Ambrosio. In recent years Aline has played in the traditional Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante do Recife and was also a key member of Elefante Groove, a groundbreaking percussive orchestrathat draws influences from Brazilian and African rhythms as well as modern beats and melodies. ALine is now the artistic director for Toronto based Maractu Nunca Antes, Toronto's rawest street percussion troupe. Alex Bordokas | | Shows | May 16, 2007 |
